The Inspiration
This is as preppy as I get and the most ‘collegiate’ I’ve ever dressed. However, I dig the menswear vibe of a blue blazer with gold buttons. It’s kind of a wardrobe staple. If it’s obnoxious to brag about scoring this bad boy for $1.50, then I’m guilty. Nautical stripes never go out of style and espadrilles make a resurgence every couple of years. This is a pretty classic combo that I can remix with ease.
Thank God for Loft pants, which fit curves like a dream. I have the hardest time finding pants that don’t gape in the waist. I still have to wear a belt, but the thighs thank me for getting the overall size right. If you’re not the type to wear a scarf in your hair or around your neck, jazz up a handbag with one!
Credit where credit is due… I first saw these espadrilles on the lovely and self-aware Kendi of Kendi Everyday. I can also credit the inimitable Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific for her impossibly chic J. Crew-meets-Audrey Hepburn vibe. Catherine Summers of Not Dressed as Lamb is another preppy-meets-quirky style favorite.
The Music
What ever happened to Badly Drawn Boy? “River, Sea, Ocean” is from the About a Boy soundtrack, which is a trifecta of brilliance — genius author (Nick Hornby), hilarious actor (Hugh Grant finally playing the rake that he is), and stellar soundtrack. Excuse me, I need to go watch TV.
Play Along at Home
A bit of trivia… you know I take most of my photographs, which is alternately maddening and thrilling. Can you spot the remote in this batch? I left it in for you observant readers.
